Our Sweet Baby Is Here

After 24 hours of labor, the Dr. decided that Merritt would not be giving birth the usual way, so she had a C-section around midnight last night. As it turned out, her pelvis is very oval and shallow and the birth canal curved, so Hagen never could have gotten out no matter how hard he tried. And he did try!! Poor baby had a cone head to beat all cone heads and much bruising around his forehead and eyes, all from pushing into the pelvis. He was 7 lb. 2oz. a little guy, 20 inches long. Has incredibly huge hands and feet and long legs, so things will be changing! He is for now, very quiet and content. Jeff is exhausted, very attentive to Merritt's needs and completely in love with his son. His true colors are flying high. Merritt was a real trooper, fought to the end and is so tired today. They will both be wonderful parents. Such a beautiful gift they have given us!!

I am so blessed and thankful to have a healthy daughter-in-law and grandson. This is a time when you can look into your heart and say that God is great and God is good.

The Secret Garden

Discover a secret garden, a sacred place that refreshes your senses and feeds your soul. Whether purposefully planted - like grapevines carefully twisted along a white painted arbor - or tended by nature's hand - a colorful explosion of wildflowers in a forgotten field - you'll recognize your own by the little flutter you feel inside. A place that inspires new dreams and renews forgotten strengths.

Or does your own secret garden flourish indoors? A garden embroidered along the edge of a vintage linen tablecloth, or decorating the notepaper and envelopes you keep on your writing table. Romantic peach rosebuds encircling a china plate. French ribbon roses, and hand-built ceramic roses added to dresser drawers and empty table tops. A floral pattern on a vintage handkerchief. Fleur-de-lis carved into a white display shelf. A vintage needlepoint of pink stargazer lilies surrounded by burgundy roses. A garden of photographs and memories, sprinkled with tiny flowers.

Secret gardens, wherever they may lie, fill our days with sacred places and secret sanctuaries.

Deals this week

Sorry for not posting last week. We had the stomach bug here! Not fun.

This week doesn’t look very good savings-wise! It’s a great time to use things you already have in your pantry, freezer & stock-pile. I’ll post the good deals I see & then end with a tip of the day!

Albertsons

$1.88 ea. wyb $20.00 worth (so, buy 8 items to get to $20 & you’ll pay $15.04)

Kelloggs cereal
Pop Tarts
Eggos
Keebler Grahams
Keebler Right Bites
Keebler Fudge Shoppe or EL Fudge Cookies ($.55/1 8.5oz or larger IP here )

Buy a 5pk Kraft Mac & Cheese for $5.69 & get another 5pk Mac & Cheese & 2 Capri Sun Sunrise 10pk Drinks FREE! (There are coupons for Free Capri Sun on the 5pks of Mac & Cheese while supplies last!). This isn’t a bad deal…makes the Mac & Cheese $.57/ea.

Tree Top Apple Juice 1.48 limit 3 (use $1/2 from 5/17 SS or IP here)
Gallon of Shoppers Value Milk 3/$5 (Skim, 1% or 2%)
Barilla pasta 4/$5
Goldfish crackers 4/$5
Lots of Albertsons brands on sale
V8 Vegetable Juice or Fusion Juice $1.88
Lawry’s Season Salt or Garlic Salt $1 (Use $.50/1 5/17 RP)

Tip of the Day #1:

Sometimes you need to buy things you DON’T need, to get deals on the items you DO need or don’t have coupons for (like fresh produce/meat/etc.)!

Seems a little crazy to buy something you can’t/don’t use, BUT what if it will get you something you CAN use?? I finally figured this out. It took me awhile to realize that ALL the coupons in the inserts have a purpose! Even if it is something you don’t use AT ALL, you can maybe use it to help get your cost down on something you DO use. Here’s a recent example…

A few weeks ago, Albertsons had a deal where if you bought $30 worth of certain items, you would get a coupon good for $10 OYNO. Well, the OneTouch Ultra Mini glucose monitor (on sale for $19.99) was included as well as Visine eye drops (on sale for $3.99). There was a coupon not too long ago for up to $20 off this OneTouch monitor and a $3 Visine coupon! So, here is what I did:

$19.99 – OneTouch monitor
$11.97 – 3 Visine eye drops
= $31.96 TOTAL

Then, I used the following coupons:
-$19.99 (OneTouch monitor)
-$9.00 (3-$3/1 Visine)
OOP $2.97 & I got back a $10 OYNO Catalina coupon!!

So, this just gave me a PROFIT of $7.03!!

Now, I can use that $10 OYNO (essentially, free money!) to buy anything I might need at Albertsons…fresh produce, meat, cheese, dairy…the possibilities are ENDLESS!). I’m on a trading board where we swap coupons we don’t need for ones we do & sometimes I even purchase coupons on Ebay. I did that for this deal. I ended up doing this deal 7 times, so I have $70 to use over the next 2 weeks! OK…it might seem a little excessive, but just think…I spent $20.79 OOP & will have $70! Not too bad.

I’ll also leave you with a look at NEXT week’s Walgreen’s ad. I think I’ll include their deals next week if the sales are slim like this week’s are:

Walgreens ad 5/31 thru 6/6

OOPS!! Too Much Fun!

Oh boy, did we have a fun two days or what? Nana even forgot what day it was, hence the missing blog yesterday. Oops!! Jacen, our grandson came over after Sunday School on Sunday and spent two days and an overnight. Obviously we had a blast! We did our traditional "puptates" or cupcakes, as he has called them since he was 14 months old. He is now cracking the eggs himself, measuring and beating the mix. This time he had chef's choice as to what he wanted to add to the batter..... mini M and M's and a few chocolate chips. I still was in charge of holding the end of the bags. While I ran after the puppy, Snickers, Jacen helped himself to some of the dry mix. Yuck!!

Yes, we had plenty of help with clean up. This is the new trick for the week, climbing into or onto the dishwasher. She won't be doing this for very long!! Puppy is growing almost as fast as Jacen. Yikes! She is a ball of motion, chewing, ripping, tearing and eating anything in her path. Those puppy teeth are like little razors.

Here is Jacen's finished product. He decided to bake his puptates in ice cream cones instead of the usual papers. Works great and is much less mess. He decided on whipped cream cheese frosting with mini M & M decorations. Looks like he is happy with the results!!

Jacen is supplying his pre-school with tadpoles. Yesterday he collected for himself from the top of our pool cover. Papa was anxious to get it all cleaned off with the sunny weather, so Jace took the last opportunity to scoop "Yuck" water and the tadpoles. He must have scooped 100 of them that we have been watching day and night. We found one today up on the rocks we put into a small plastic tote, already starting to lose his tail and sprout new legs.
Eileen & I have been so focused on getting ready for our Farm Chicks show, the rest of life has fallen to the wayside. The house has not been kept well, meals are scant, sleep is limited, family is neglected. Just a bit of time with a five year old easily brings the right perspective back into line. Letting the work go, the worry flee for just awhile, traded in for a child's whisper "Nana, I love you", too perfect.
Hope your week-end was wonderful!

I Really Love Flowers!

It's been such a fun evening. I've had a cute new bride to be here looking through my wedding photos, discussing ideas for decor and wedding floral. What a sweet blessing it is to work with my brides. Her colors will be Chocolate and Pink with accents of green and cream! Yummy! There are so many gorgeous flowers that will be available in August for us to choose from. It was so fun looking through books and magazines and of course the Internet at gorgeous flower arrangements and ideas. Latter I spent time putting together my order for the next wedding concentrating on getting just the right balance of colors and highlights. This one will be done in purples, lavenders and pinks. Isn't it turning out gorgeous! I really love flowers!

Cherished Memories

Old photographs, yellowed with age. Dad's pocket watch, the hands of time still ticking. Maybe slower than before. A delicate needlepoint, not quite completed, wrapped in tissue and waiting to be rediscovered on the bottom of a hope chest.

Pieces of the past, your most cherished memories, seeking a place in the present. The faces in the photo may have grown up or passed on. The fingers that wound the watch and pulled the needle now lie still. Old French perfume bottles lining a bedroom shelf. But these memories remain, and ask to live again.

Much loved tablecloths, used for special family occasions. Grandma's rhinestone brooch, tarnished with years, but twinkling with the possibility of renewed life. A precious delicate hankie carried by a favorite Aunt. Cherished memories that make your lips smile and your eyes shine and the fun and joy of making them into something new again.

Join Forget Me Not Dreams and the shops at Make Mine Pink in celebrating Cherished Memories. We will be featuring some new custom made products you won't want to miss. Sign up for our mailing list to receive your weekly members bonus.

DAY 2 TREASURE HUNTING AGAIN!!

Do you love this little greeting or what? The first inside booth was wonderful! She was selling these large old metal advertising letters and some numbers. We searched through for FMND, Forget Me Not Dreams, for our show booths but came up one letter short... no "D". It just won't work without the Dreams. Life doesn't work without the dreams we have and strive for every day.

This is a photo of just a sliver of the inside of the booth. We just loved her display technique and all of the different little items she had collected. The booth was lovely with fine vintage china mixed with chippy furniture and rusty buckets. The owner is also in charge of the Lacey Marketplace which runs all summer , every week-end, carrying antiques to local farmers' produce. I'm sure we'll be back to check it out!

We were sent from the Flea Market to the Second Hand Rose, everything vintage and more. What a treat that was wandering inside and out looking for treasures. We really had fun here looking in corners, under tables and sifting through the outdoor finery. Most of the Flea Market vendors are friends with the owners of Second Hand Rose and for good reason we could see! We only wished that we had more time to poke around, but husbands were waiting as were the week-end chores that we ran away from. Isn't it great to escape??!!
PS - Rebecca, you are welcome to wander with us anytime! My daughter-in-law is sitting on 2 centimeters dilation, so we might be flying quickly to Denver soon to greet our new grand son, Hagen. So exciting!
Happy treasure hunting to all!

SEARCHING FOR TREASURES..... AGAIN!!

We had another wonderful Friday and Saturday together hunting for treasures for our upcoming Farm Chicks Antique Show. Are blessings showering on us from Heaven or what?
We did some local hunting on Friday, heading out to the countryside looking for barn sales. It was a beautiful day, our warmest this year so far. Made a few friends along the way too! This fluffly sheep and curious goat came running to greet us.... were they looking for food? Did we smell bad? No, antique lovers like us! We did find a great estate sale back in the city where a woman had an incredible collection of china candy plates with the handle. You may see some of them soon!!

We arrived in Olympia Washington later Friday night. Our driving motto is "It never hurts to turn around". Must have done that 15 times before we were able to find our hotel. They do need a sign and change the GPS address from where they used to reside! Crazy!! Both of us being great Sunday School girls, we do have a strange away from home goal. We are working our way through the casinos in Oregon and Washington close to our shopping destinations. $20 from each of us into the pot and away we go! We thought the Road Trip game was perfect for us! We had to fight our way onto the machine, but we were able to lose $8.00 from our pot. In all, we we were able to put $35 into our gas fund, very unusual for us!!
On our trip to southern Oregon, we discovered a special treat at Burger King... the icee float. It's delicious!! We allow ourselves to order a medium icee, freezy orangey float, BLENDED, when the circumstances dictate. Try one, you'll love it! Tastes just like a vintage Dreamsicle. Remember those?
More tomorrow on our second day of treasure hunting!

Romantic Roses for Pink Friday

We're in love with roses. From the gentle scent of the first spring rose to the hand painted roses on repurposed furniture, we surround ourselves with the beautiful flower and its romance everywhere we can. In a bedroom, fabric pillows and slipcovers covered in romantic red roses and buds. On a sofa in the living room, needlepoint pillows rich in history and memories, with the most intricate rose designs. On a dresser or hallway table, a pink porcelain rose tucked into the corner of a vanity tray, reminiscent of a dresser tray that held my mother's prized perfume bottles.

Perhaps our love of roses springs from the memories they awaken. A broken china charm painted with a blushing rose evokes an image of the hand painted rose china my grandmother carefully brought out whenever I came for tea. Silk roses placed in a hand painted tea pot remind me of the fragrance of fresh cut roses from my mother's rose garden. Ribbons of hearts and roses across a folding fan recollect a fan she might have held on a hot Sunday morning in church.
Or perhaps it's the myriad of messages a rose can express without saying a word. A rose wreath on an embossed card adds the words "I care about you" to everything you write. A welcome wreath of pink and purple roses hung by the front door announces "Welcome!" to all who enter. Vintage postcards adorned with roses by some of our favorite rose artists from the 1800s, framed and displayed proudly in our homes, inspire our imaginations with possibilities that could have been penned. For whatever reason, one thing is sure. Romantic roses capture our hearts and fill our homes.

Old Barns and Fond Memories

I love old barns, old farm buildings, big or small. Maybe it's the fond, old memories of being in my grandparents' barn in Minnesota... the rough smells of animals I had not lived around, cows, chickens and wild cats. My sister and I had to collect the eggs each morning, a scary job for little kids from the city. My grandpa would teach us how to make little canoes from birch bark and we would go to visit the Indian village where Grandpa had built the school, church and store for the tribe. The smells of coffee and wood burning stoves still takes me back to their farm home built with boards that Grandpa planed from the trees he felled on the property. Talking with my grandparents was difficult since they spoke Swedish with English mixed in. Pretty incredible when I look back now.

My grandfather was very artistic and musical, first chair violin in the Swedish Army orchestra, the music for the king. Maybe my love of photography came genetically from him. I hope to soon get some of my photos onto notecards and prints. Sometimes that drive from deep inside is impossible to turn off. My art, dedicated to my grandfather.

Farm Chicks Here We Come!

We are so honored to have been accepted into the wonderful Farm Chicks Antique Show up in Spokane Washington ! Five of us who produce and participate in shows down here in the Portland/Vancouver area are headed up to Spokane on June 5th for the big show on June 6th and 7th. Last week we started our weekly meeting(s) to prepare our mock-up display. We are so fortunate that one of our members, Linda, has an empty shop space that we can use to set up our complete display to make sure that everything looks just right and fits into our allotted space. I will be showing you that progression as each week passes and the panic builds. We have just designed our price tags, thanks to Eileen and Randy. They turned out really cute. So this week we spent time planning and cutting and distributing tags. Our bags and tissue are ordered and the first load of product for Eileen & I has been delivered to the shop. We have decided on our crazy, eye catching, unforgettable aprons and still have to find the perfect fabric so we can get our sewing machines running.

Of course months of collecting have gone on prior to this week just to build our inventory. We have blogged about one of our "Treasure Hunt Trips" previously. Last Friday Eileen and I went out on an Estate Sale search. It was bleak, nothing but junk. Our next stop on the list took us to an older neighborhood, very narrow road, heavily treed so it was really dark. We rounded a curve in the road and found ourselves in the midst of a police raid surrounding the estate sale! Do we chance it or keep driving?? We aren't that adventurous!! Maybe in high school, but not at my advanced age!! There were 6 police cars and the cops were searching door to door, front and back yards for someone. Hmm-mmm, we missed that sale.

We will continue to show you our progress in preparing for the Farm Chicks sale and actually take you digitally with us to the sale in June. We can use your prayers on this one that all goes well... safely!

Have a great week!

"Beautiful Blues" for Pink Friday

Beautiful blues… the classic colors of sea and sky. Once a year, beautiful blues against crisp, clean whites adorned the blue and white issue of Victoria Magazine. Do you remember how you anticipated your copy? Blue is calming and serene. It's a coastal color, often used in bedrooms and rooms of relaxation. From delicate pastel to a deep, emboldened navy, adding blues to your decor can evoke a tranquil yet often vibrant mood.
In the bathroom, perhaps a white towel edged with beautiful blue forget-me-nots and pale blue trim. On the kitchen table, a teapot or tea cup with a blue floral pattern, or a shabby blue tea cozy that warms a pot with beautiful blue, waiting for a friend. Please join us at Forget Me Not Dreams and Make Mine Pink for shopping with a twist on Friday May 8, 2009 as we present "Beautiful Blues"

Ready to start saving?

Thanks Karen & Eileen for letting me post on your blog.

With the economy the way it is, what better time than now to start saving money, right? And using coupons with sale items is a GREAT way to start! Most coupons can be found in the Sunday paper, but there are TONS of other great coupons on the Internet. You need to download a program on to your computer so that the bar-code can print correctly & scan correctly at the store, but after that, the savings are ENDLESS.

You can generally print 2 coupons PER computer. After the coupon prints, just hit your back button a few times & another one will print. Each coupon will have a unique code printed under the expiration date. So, if you have more than one computer at home, that will increase the number of coupons you can print. Here is a list of websites that frequently change the coupons they have:

***Word of caution…if you think you *might* use a certain coupon; print it because they might be gone when you want it. Generally, the expiration date on the printed coupons will be one month from the date you print them.

Whose House Is It Anyway??

The third day in our own little Puppy Kingdom. I spent the morning shopping for an adult size travel kennel and/or safespot crate for our little one. We had high winds and torrential rain today, so the adventure wasn't exactly like our fun escape for girls week-ends! A wonderful man from PetCo carried the mammoth crate out to the Suburban for me. He was soaked!! Tonight we are the proud owners of the large dog crate, two bags of cattle hooves (for cutting the second set of teeth), puppy treats for training purposes and 8 new chewy toys. What a pampered pup!
I had worked late last night on some new tags to list today. Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday! Snickers was interested in the everything I was working on. While I ran to the phone, she flipped my working tray and chewed my new tags to bits. Anyone interested in puppy punched tags? Very unique! So, the training program started tonight. It kills me to hear her cry in the crate, but we may have a big jump on potty training in just one evening. Thanks to our "Mom" the best golden retreiver breeder ever, Alice Brown, in Amboy Washington. Of course our baby is so incredibly intelligent.... smarter than us obviously!
Watch for the new non- pup punched tag sets! And, Wednesday will be the debut of my wonderful daughter's (daughter-in-law, but she feels like a much loved daughter) grocery shopping savings with coupons. She is incredible with coupons and saves their family thousands of dollars every year. She also saves some of her purchases to sell at a big garage sale in July where she rakes in the big bucks. Pam is the greatest! Check out her post!

We Welcome A New Family Member!!

Here she is ... Beamer's Snickerdoodle Delight for her formal name, Snickers for short. I believe she is the only puppy who can drink 2 tablespoons of water and immediately pee 4 cups of fluid throughout the house! We're quickly getting used to the messes, the chewing and the pouting fits by our 13 year old Golden. Beyond not being baby-proofed, this little ball of fur just makes us smile, inside and out. She scampers in and out, investigates every little thing and watches our resident hawks soak overhead. Life is a party! I am so thankful and feeling very blessed to have found this little gift to replace my Beamer who died in February at the age of 13. Such wonderful present from God, unconditional love with 4 feet!
